When ordering shutters for your home, you will need to measure the windows to ensure that you order the correct size. This guide will show you how to do this accurately.
To measure a window for shutters, start by measuring the width of the window opening at the top, middle and bottom. Add these measurements together and then divide by 3 to get the average width.
Next, measure the height of the window opening at the left, middle, and right. Add these measurements together and then divide by 3 to get the average height.
Finally, measure the depth of the window opening from front to back.
Now that you have these measurements, you can use them to select an appropriate shutter size. For example, if you have a window that is 80 inches wide, 80 inches high, and 2 inches deep, you would need a shutter size that is 80 inches wide and 80 inches high.

How To Fit Shutters Yourself
Fitting shutters isn’t too difficult if you have the right equipment and know how to do it. Most DIY stores will have all the materials needed for sale, so there is no need to buy everything at once. You’ll also find plenty of useful tips online, through blogs or YouTube channels. Here are some steps that might help you get started:

1) Remove your old frames
If they’re not in good shape anymore, just take them off their hinges before you bring the new ones home. If they are still sturdy enough, then simply clean them up to remove any dust or debris stuck in between the slats before proceeding with step 2.
2) Make sure your space is safe!
Shutters require a lot of space, so you have to clear everything that’s not permanent away. You do not want anyone or anything getting into harm’s way during the work. Also, make sure your floor is clean and dry enough to support the weight of the shutters; otherwise, it might warp under them.
3) Measure your windows
You’ll need these measurements for step 4 (installing hinges). To save some time on measuring large spans, use masking tape to mark off around 10 cm (4 inches) increments on each side of the window frame where you want the first shutter to end; then use a level on top of those marks to extend accurate guidelines along their length. Do this for all sides of your window until they meet in the middle.
4) Install the hinges
Shutters are typically fitted with two or three hinges, which are screwed into the frame of the window on either side. The screws should be around 10 cm (4 inches) long and go through the shutter and into the frame; use a drill bit that’s the same size as the screw shaft. If you’re using an L-shaped hinge, make sure it’s installed in such a way that the shutter will open to the left or right, depending on your preference.
5) Hang the shutters
With the hinges attached, hold up the shutters to each side of the window and line them up with your guidelines. Once they’re in place, mark where the screws need to go onto both the shutters and the frame, then install them.
6) Adjust the shutters
Shutters are designed to be easy to open and close but they still need to fit your window perfectly in order for them to work correctly. To make sure that’s the case, use a leveler tool or piece of wood with a nail hammering through it, straighten up the shutters until they’re level across the top and bottom, then secure them into place with screws on either side. And you’re all done! Now enjoy your new custom-fit shutters!

If you feel like giving up before you finish, keep in mind that it certainly won’t be the last time you have to readjust them.
